In these last few years that I've been working with Paco Gil, he has repeated, more often than not, “requinto”. “Requinto” is the Spanish translation of E-Flat Clarinet, the second smaller in size of the clarinet family (the smallest is the A b). With the exception of the Baroque Concertos by Molter (originally intended for the D Clarinet, although normally performed with Requinto), William Neil, Jerome Neff, and four concertos for “requinto” and band by the Spanish composer Manuel Lillo, we do not have a lot of works for this instrument which, since the Symphonie Fantastique by Hector Berlioz has been a common device to evoke dancing and jocular landscapes, like in Till Eulenspiegel by Richard Strauss.

The evident virtuosity of Paco with the E-Flat clarinet encouraged me to compose a new work for this instrument accompanied by clarinet ensemble. Soon I made sure that the skills executed by the requinto would not have a comical intention, and the clarinet ensemble would support the soloist with a subtle repeated figuration in the simplest way possible. The soloist would rest during two serene chorals, which in a mystic and austere way would perform the “tutti”.

It was premiered the twentieth, July 2015, in the Iglesia Matriz (Matriz Church), in the Portuguese Municipality of Loures, in the closing concert of the International Encounter of Clarinets “Marcos Romao do Reis”, with Paco Gil as a soloist, with the “Príncipe de Asturias” Clarinet Orchestra, and it's Maestro, Antonio Saiote. The Spanish premiere was a few days later, the twentyfour, in the World Clarinet Congress (ClarinetFest2015) held in Madrid.
