The Knife Grinder

Dating from the seventeenth century, there is documentary evidence of itinerant knife grinders, in Galicia, where they have remained as a traditional way of life. This tradition also spread to the rest of the Iberian Peninsula and Hispanic America. Painters like Goya and Antonio de Puga, and writers like Benito Pérez Galdós, wrote and captured in their canvases this humble craft. Even today it is common to hear this man through the streets of our cities and especially in our villages, with his pan flute made of cane (chiflo), playing with one hand a sort of little musical scale, calling to people attention so that they leave their houses and sharpen their cutting tools with the tapered point of the grindstone.

There were many mornings, in my early days, in which I woke up with the cry of the knife grinder, and, as a genuine character that was gradually replaced by the machines that do the same job, I decided to dedicate to him this little piece, imitating the melodic turns of his flute, and in the same way as him, I call the clarinet players to perform it.
